Dream job

Jimmy Lin Yu Chun is following in the footsteps of Susan Boyle, going from reality TV to the Internet and now, the recording studio.

LIKE the person he is famously likened to, Jimmy Lin Yu Chun is living the dream right now.

The Internet sensation who emerged from Asia on the heels of the phenomenal success of Scottish spinster-turned-superstar Susan Boyle is on his way to becoming a recording artiste like his “predecessor”.

The 24-year-old part-time storehand from Taiwan gained worldwide attention this year following his near-flawless rendition of the ballad I Will Always Love You in the style of Whitney Houston. The clip of his performance on a local reality TV talent show was posted on YouTube and the rest is history.

A little over a month after his appearance on Super Star Avenue or One Million Star (Chao Ji Xing Guang Da Dao), Lin has already been signed up by Sony Music, the same company that distributes Boyle’s best-selling debut album, I Dreamed A Dreamed, last year.

The chubby crooner with the distinctive mop top is set to release his debut album – not one but two! – next month. One of them features a collection of English songs while the other is a mix of English and Mandarin numbers.

“It is a dream come true for me. I’ve always wanted to be a recording artiste, to release my own albums, and to perform for everyone,” said a beaming Lin after he inked a record deal with Sony Music at a global media conference held at a hotel in Shanghai, China, on May 13.

Present at the ceremony were the company’s president of Greater China Adam Tsuei and Wang Wei Chong, the producer of Super Star Avenue.

The deal will also see the aspiring singer going on a performing world tour in October.

So, how does he feel about being dubbed “Taiwan’s Susan Boyle” or the “Chinese Susan Boyle” by the local media?

“Much honoured, of course. As I’d also faced failure and rejection before, I took courage from Susan Boyle, who was probably not accepted initially, but was brave enough to take to the stage.
